Weekend Round Up (6/7 March) PDF Print E-mail

This weekend's round up of refereeing incidents follows on from another week of controversy after the Old Firm game last Sunday.....please read on for our summary of the major incidents and comments from fans forums across Scotland....

Rangers 3-1 St. Mirren - Charlie Richmond

Rangers - 1 yellow for McCulloch
St. Mirren - 1 yellow for Thomson

The main talking point in this game appears to be an incident between Rangers’ Weir and St. Mirren’s Higdon in the 5th minute.  Higdon appeared to have been tugged back right on the edge of the box where a freekick was given.  However, Weir was not shown a card for this incident.

Here's a clip of the incident - http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=33ju1ba&s=6

Buddies Manager Gus MacPherson was not happy with the outcome saying big decisions go against his team stating that Weir impeded Higdon in the process of shooting, but no decision was made by the referee.

What's your thoughts?  Was Richmond right not to issue any card?

Hibs 1-0 Kilmarnock - Stevie O'Reilly

Hibs - no cards
Kilmarnock - 1 yellow for Fowler

Only the one card issued in this game with no obvious talking points in relation to the referee’s performance.  Is this a fair reflection of the referee?  We'd love to know your thoughts.

Hamilton 1-1 Aberdeen - Stephen Finnie

Hamilton - 4 yellow cards - McLaughlin, Mensing, Elebert and Canning
Aberdeen - 3 yellow cards - Young, Paton and Diamond

Seven cards flashed in this game, looking at the Accies World forum the incidents they felt were contentious were that Diamond shouldn't have been on the park after a challenge on Imrie which should have seen him receive a straight red with one Hamilton fans saying on Accies World "Diamond could have walked for his tackle on Imrie as it was just about assault" and a penalty claim turned down for a challenge on Imrie.

The BBC mentioned that Flavio Paixao was fortunate to escape a booking after throwing himself to the ground and claiming for a penalty with five minutes remaining - was it a pen or should he have been given a yellow card from simulation?

St. Johnstone 1-2 Motherwell - Craig Thomson

St. Johnstone - no cards
Motherwell - 1 yellow issued to Forbes

Not much to report in this game it seems. On the Steelmen Online this thread http://www.steelmenonline.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=6772 says the refereeing performance was 'purely incompetent' - do you agree?  What decisions were made that merited the referee’s display being classed as incompetent?

Falkirk 0-2 Celtic – Brian Winter

Falkirk – 2 yellow cards issued to McLean and Twaddle
Celtic – no cards

One Falkirk fan on ‘One F in Falkirk’ forum stated ‘Cant help but feel their has been so much publicity about decisions going against Celtic that they will get everything going on Sunday as the referee is under so much pressure’.

This is no doubt what a lot of Falkirk fans were thinking and I’m sure Brian Winter would have been slightly apprehensive going into the game, however, it seemed to pass without any major incidents.

Would that be fair to say?

Dundee Utd 1-0 Hearts – Mike Tumilty

Dundee Utd – no cards
Hearts – no cards

In this card-less affair, Mike Tumilty had a couple of major calls – both were penalty claims for the home, which Tumilty turned down. One fan on Hearts’ Jambos Kickback forum stated it was a stonewall penalty whilst another felt that the ref was weak giving everything to the home side.

There were no comments of note on the ref’s performance on Dundee Utd Mad so we would like to hear from you.

So…..it's over to you!

I was at the game in the Copland Rd and thought at first Sir Davie might have been lucky to stay on the park. However after watching the clip I would say it wasn't a clear goalscoring opportunity as there was cover coming in from both sides. Should have been a booking though. Potter's challenge on Kenny Miller when he barged into his back in an aerial challenge was even more worthy of a yellow. Thought the ref did ok generally.

Ref today at tannadice was nothing short of terrible. Its not an exaggeration to say Utd could have had 7 penalties, Every cross into the box led to man-handling of Utd players. I've read that we have to give him credit for letting the game flow, rubbish, he's there to implement the lawsof the game. If it's a foul, and there's no advantage, then give it. Oh and by the way Mr Tumilty, shirt pulling and holding players down to stop them jumping are both fouls.

It seems, all in all, like a fairly quiet week in comparison with the last month or so.

Great quote from Mowbray relating to McGeady accusing referee Dougie McDonald of bias in last week's Old Firm showdown.

, "I had to think twice about what impartial means," said Mowbray. "I think probably Aiden got baffled by the science of it or the words. If a journalist used the word impartial to him, I'm pretty sure he didn't know what it meant."

Perhaps I'm about to embark on an ill-informed waffle, but stay with me;

Hamilton v Aberdeen: McLaughlin takes down Paton on the edge of the box as the proverbial 'last man'. Diamond hammers into Imrie, gets nowhere near the ball. Both bookings.

Paton stands in front of the keeper taking a kick-out, and receives the same punishment.

I don't understand this logic. How can these offences be punished in the same way?

Is there scope for the referees to have another colour of card for more petulant 'crimes'? This could also see an end to players being sent off for taking their shirts off.
