Weekend Round Up (24/25 April) PDF Print E-mail

Here's the latest weekly referee round up. As always, we'd love to hear your comments and also, whilst you are here, please take time to vote in our poll.

Read on for this weekends summary......

Falkirk 0-1 Hamilton – Calum Murray

Falkirk – 2 yellow cards issued – Arfield and Duffy
Hamilton – 2 yellow cards issued – Paixao (M) and Imrie

This game had the potential to be an explosive one with everything that was at stake for Falkirk.  Referee Calum Murray issued out 4 cards (two to each side) in an encounter that seemed to pass off without any major incidents.  There was no mention of the referee in either of the post match interviews given by the Managers.  Additionally, looking at the One F in Falkirk and Accies World forums there’s nothing of note relating to Referees Murray’s performance.

So Bairns and Accies fans,  did Calum Murray have a good game considering all that was at stake?  We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Hearts 0-2 Motherwell – Brian Winter

Hearts – No cards
Motherwell – One yellow card issued to O’Brien

Referee Winter and his assistants didn’t impress the Tynecastle faithful with a thread dedicated on Jambos Kickback to the officials:
http://www.hmfckickback.co.uk/index.php?/topic/71834-refereeing-performance/

Both assistants appeared unwilling to make a decision despite the fact they were closer to and had a better view of incidents.  The apparent reluctance to book Craigan seems to have drawn most criticism from the fans in particular ‘andya’ the person that started the thread on Jambos Kickback.

Referee Winters also ruled out a perfectly good goal by O’Brien where the ball rebounded off his head, however Winter gave a handball despite the assistant having a better view of the incident.

On the Steelmen Online message board, the main talking point was that they thought Referee Winter booked Hearts Black, however Well’s O’Brien has been reported in the press as receiving the yellow – discussion on this point can be found on page 9 in this thread - http://www.steelmenonline.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=7247&st=160

St. Johnstone 1-1 Aberdeen – Dougie McDonald

St. Johnstone – no cards issued
Aberdeen – 2 yellow cards issued to Marshall and MacLean

This one appears to have been a typical end of season affair with nothing of note in the match report or indeed the We Are Perth and AFC Chat message boards.  Is this is true reflection of Referee Dougie McDonald’s performance?  Let us know your thoughts.

St. Mirren 1-0 Kilmarnock – Craig Thomson

St. Mirren – 3 yellow cards issued to Thomson, Brady and Gallacher
Kilmarnock – 2 yellow cards issued to Bryson and Kyle

Another potential explosive encounter with Scotland’s only full-time referee appointed for this game.

On the Virtual West Bank message board their main concern about the Referee’s performance centres around the number of fouls that Kilmarnock’s Kyle committed prior to being booked:
 http://www.blackandwhitearmy.com/forums/index.php/topic/29247-the-bold-st-mirren-v-coo-felching-killie/page__st__240

Do you agree with this, apart from not booking Kyle earlier did Thomson have a good game?  We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Dundee Utd 0-2 Celtic – Iain Brines

Dundee Utd – 6 yellow cards issued to Pernis, Kenneth, Myrie-Williams, Buaben, Gomis and Goodwillie. 1 red issued to  Myrie-Williams
Celtic – 2 yellow cards issued to N’Guemo and Brown

There was a card frenzy at this Tannadice encounter with Dundee United on the end of 6 yellows and a red card. Celtic ran out the winners in this frenetic encounter securing second place and the major talking point was Myrie-Williams seeing red for United after receiving a second yellow card for a challenge on N’Guemo.

United manager Peter Houston spoke out claiming Brines sent off Myrie-Williams in error and it should have been Prince Bauben. Houston said, “He got the wrong guy, let him come out and say it.
“He had spoken to Prince Bauben minutes before that after a tackle and said, ‘If you do that again you are going off the park’.

“I think he thought it was Prince.

Bauben added to the controversy by saying: “Jennison said that he thought the referee thought it was me but the referee should know, that’s his job, he’s a professional.”

United started picking up cards in the latter stages of the game as they tried to get into the match having gone 1-0 down in the first-half with Kenneth and Bauben both picking up yellow cards. Pernis then conceded an injury-time penalty and was cautioned for fouling McGeady.

We would love to hear your views on what was certainly a controversial encounter. Did Brines get it wrong? What course of action should be taken now?

Hibernian 0-1 Rangers – William Collum

Hibs – 1 yellow card issued to Stokes
Rangers – 2 yellow cards issued to Papac and Thomson

Rangers sealed the Premier League title after running out 1-0 winners against Hibs at Easter Road. There were certainly talking points after a penalty claim was turned down after Riordan broke into the box and went down under a challenge from Whittaker. Colin Nish also had a goal disallowed for a foul on McCulloch as they chased a late equaliser.

Were there any other notable incidents worthy of discussion?  Did Collum call both the incidents reported correctly?

It's important that we get your feedback and thoughts on refereeing performances so look forward to reading your comments...... over to you.

Given that Iain Brines pointe around the pitch to indicate persistent fouling when showing the red card to JMW, I felt he got it wrong. If it is the case, and it was a case of mistaken ident*ty, I also think it it very poor (and perhaps subconsciously racist) that he was unable to differentiate between black players. I also felt he was very inconsistent with some of his decisions to show cards. I did not think the game merited the number of cards shown and if cards shown were justified, then cards should also have been shown to Brown (waving for card to be shown on numerous occasions, which is a bookable offence) Naylor (professional foul/blatent obstruction on Swanson). Also felt penalty given was softer than the decision not given to United (Boruc push on Kovacevic)
