Weekend Round Up (13 March) PDF Print E-mail

We've pulled together a short round up of this weekend's games and we'd love to know your views of the performance of the man in the middle.....read on for our summary.

Falkirk 1-2 St Johnstone – Stevie O’Reilly

Falkirk – 2 yellow cards issued to Scobbie and Twaddle
St Johnstone – 2 yellow for Smith

Falkirk went into the lead in this game, however, on the stroke of half-time Stevie O’Reilly awarded a penalty following a handball from Brian McLean. One fan on ‘One F in Falkirk’ commented that there was little doubt the ball hit McLean’s hand but it was debateable as to whether the ball played hand. He also went on to point out O’Reilly missing Duberry fouling Moutinho. Another fan also felt St Johnstone’s keeper, Smith, should have been red-carded. St Johnstone fans, on the other hand, felt the penalty was a ‘stonewaller’.

What were your thoughts? Was it a penalty? Should Smith have been given his marching orders?

Motherwell 3-1 Hearts – Stephen Finnie

Motherwell - 1 yellow card issued to Jennings
Hearts – 2 yellows issued to Jonsson and Santana

Craig Brown’s Motherwell went 12 games unbeaten today in what appeared to be a relatively easy afternoon for ref, Stephen Finnie. Other than an offside decision 65 minutes into the encounter when Jutkiewicz had slotted the ball home, there wasn’t much to report.

Neither Steelmenonline, nor Jamboskickback made much reference to referee Stephen Finnie. Is that a good sign? How would you rate Finnie’s performance?

Hamilton 1-0 St Mirren – Euan Norris

Hamilton – 5 yellow cards issued to McArthur, Mensing, Antoine-Curier, Neil and F Paixao

St Mirren – 5 yellow cards issued to Mair, Barron, Ross, Murray and Mehmet

This 10 card affair ended in a 1-0 win for Hamilton and Euan Norris was involved from the off as he chalked off an Antoine-Curier goal after just 21 seconds. No major incidents were widely reported, however, one fan on Accies World commented that Mensing might have been sent off for a retaliatory push in the first half. In the end, Norris decided to book both players involved. Reference was also made to Imrie receiving some harsh treatment without any protection from the officials.

One fan on the Black and White Army forum summarised the ref’s performance as ‘totally inept’ and couldn’t understand how St Mirren ended up with the same number of bookings as Hamilton. He felt, ‘Mensing should have walked as raising your hands would normally result in a red card. Mair was booked after doing nothing, Neil pushed him in the chest. Poor decisions all round for both sides’.

Do you feel we’ve summarised this weekend’s refereeing performances accurately? Are there any major decisions that we’ve missed?

We’d love to hear your views so…….over to you.

I thought the ref did fine today despite the number of bookings - it was a pretty physical slog. I only saw Mensing's reaction - a clear push in the chest - and feared the worst, but after consultation with the linesman Mr Norris opted to book both players. Only one decision really annoyed me, in the first half, where a free kick was awarded against Antoine-Curier when I'd thought he'd been fouled - ref seemed to think it was "making a back" or something, but it didn't look anything like that from where I was.

Less praise for the standside linesman who signalled handball against Mark McLaughlin as he grabbed the ball in touch to take a quick throw. My guess is he was looking at the edge of the technical area by mistake!

Re Accies v St Mirren

The far-side linesman saw the whole Mensing incident - he was fouled as he tried to get up and retaliated by pushing the StM player, both were booked.

I agree that Mensing could have been sent off but here's a question - why wasn't a penalty awarded for the original incident? The StM player was booked after all which acknowledges there was an offence.

Also, Antoine-Curier's goal - Accies match video shows it probably was not offside. TV coverage misses it out - probably hadn't switched equipment on as it happened after 21secs.
